Message from Ivan Watkins

I’ve found that we must combine oral history, genealogy, historiography and anthropology – to begin to grasp who we really are!

Racial categorization unfortunately oversimplifies and confounds most of us. With engrained tropes such as “Black/Dark-Skinned being synonymous with “African” and thus “Slave” robs us of a far more dynamic, rich and complex individual and collective heritage and identity!

We are as complex as history is and should remain open-minded and honest to best uncover our roots and share them with future generations. Thankfully, my Mother did a lot of genealogical research as did my Father – who kept archives of letters, photos, artifacts etc.
