The GABUGAN Suit

“The GABUGAN Suit” (detail) Front apron of 2024 Wildman Suit
Mixed Media – (beads, sequins, cockle feathers, cowries shells, on embellished African Mask) in Custom Shadow Box

This Wildman Suit apron was the most recent created by Ivan B Watkins. It conjures the ancient totem of the “Frilled Dragon/Lizard”. A sacred totem to Native Americans, Australian Aborigines, Asians, Celtics, and Christians – representing for all of these – a symbol of protection, transformation and renewal, future vision and growth!

Ivan has been masking as a Wildman with the Black Masking Indians of New Orleans, since 2014. He began masking as the “Spy” of the Northside Skull and Bone Gang in 2005, then became Wildman of the Yellow Pocohontas Tribe and is now Wildman of the Golden Feather Hunters led by NEA Fellow, Big Chief Shaka Zulu. Ivan is renowned within the New Orleans Black Masking Indian culture, despite his relatively recent addition to this centuries old tradition. He is often regarded as carrying the “Old Time” Wildman Indian Spirit and role within the tradition of masking, that dates back at least to the 1830’s.
